Lots of people ask me this question. Search Engine Optimisation is talked about a lot but my business gets by ok without it. Its just an unneccesary expense…Isnt it?
The truth is that without SEO, your business will suffer, you will lose customers and be overtaken by your more seo savvy competitors. The Country and world is changing. When for example did you last see someone get out a big phone book or directory to find something?
Another thing people say to me, “I had my website optimised a couple of years back so i dont need it anymore”.
If only it were that simple. SEO or search engine optimisation is a complicated and forever changing process. The search engines are always evolving. They could be compared to a living organism. There are always changes happening and as they grow and have to compete with new engines they evolve. The process of where sites are ranked known as the algorithm are always changing. For you as a business owner, you want and need to be on Google’s top pages. Everyone is searching via the the web to find services and products.

And as more and more people leave the Yellow Pages in the drawer, how will they find you? Will you be listed on page one or two? If not, you may as well be invisible.
People do not tend to venture past the first page of search results. That is way too much effort. So your business will not be found.
So who will show up? Well go to Google and do a search. Not for your business name, but for your service. So if your in Brentwood and sell flowers. Search for ‘Brentwood Florists’ or ‘Flower shops in Brentwood’. Are you there? If not then SEO is a must before you lose any more business.
There are many different ways to promote your website so it rises up the search results. But beware as there are good ways to promote your site and bad ways which you will want to avoid. So whats the best way to get a Google friendly website that will jump staraight to the first page?
Ingredients for an search engine optimised Website
Good Relevant Content
Content is king and always will be for top positions. If you search for any keyword, you will find sites that have plenty of information and content about that phrase. Without content, rankings will not last. So ideally what you need is good content that is updated regularly. Also in an ideal world you will target a specific keyword for each page.
If your website has poor or little content that is not useful or informative, then the search engines will see this and send your non useful site spiralling onto page 10 or lower. It may even remove you from the search results entirely.
This is why we cannot recommend highly enough, having a regulaly posted blog on your website. You will aquire over time, a massive amount of highly useful information that your visitors will enjoy, will improve sales and keep people coming back.
BackLinks
You will never rank well for competative keyword phrases unless you have websites linking to you. Ideally you want one way links from authoritative or important websites from within your market or industry.
Search engines such as Google, look at many factors when ranking your site, and a very important one is the number of links to your site, because if lots of sites link to you, there must be a good reason. You have lots of useful information that people want to see.
However there are links and then there are links. Anchor text is very important as well. If the link to your website says ‘click here’ its a lot less useful than one that says ‘blue widgets’. You also need links not just to your home or index page, but to all the pages in your website.
Visitor Loyalty
Google’s all seeing eye knows when people visit your site and when they leave it. If a number of visitors click from the search engine and visits your website, but then leaves straight away. Google will mark this as a site that has poor content that wasnt what the visitor wanted, and will demote you accordingly. This is why the website design and quality content are so important to your rankings.
So, now you know what you need, who is going to do the work? You could always go down the route of training your own staff or you can hand it over to people who know what they are doing from day one.
The problem with doing this work yourself or having someone from the company do it, is that the work can be pretty mundane. And of course if they get it wrong you can actually damage your rankings.
If you want to be on page one for key search phrases, then getting a professional SEO Company involved is a must. The cost involved with you doing this work instead of spending it building your business is a false economy.
