As you may well know, getting backlinks especially good quality backlinks is the backbone of a good SEO strategy for your business. But how do you go about this if your a small business on a tight advertising budget?
Well, there are plenty of ways to raise awareness of your website and business whilst creating great quality long term seo building links. So lets look at how to go about it.
Use Your Flexibility
Your small business has a great advantage against the big boys and that is flexibility.
A big business needs to wade through meetings, red tape, managers, sub managers etc. to even order a roll of sellotape. You however can move quickly and make instant decisions .
In most small businesses there are one maybe two people taking the decisions, so use this to your advantage. You can respond to fast breaking news before them and notice changes in consumer trends. If so you can get it published first on your website/blog posts before anyone else does.
There are ways for you to monitor breaking news and trends in your area of interest, sign up to trend sites, such as Google Trends, and monitor news feeds using Google Alerts.
Linking Strategy
If you have a purely business/commercial site then it will be hard to get other sites to link to you so go the non commercial route by creating a blog as part of your site or even a second site.
It will make it much easier to get links to your website if you can provide buyer information, product reviews and industry news from your sector. You can then link from this popular area or new site to your commercial site for more visitors.
If you can then create a niche information site cover subjects that you cannot find elsewhere. If for instance you are one of only a few sources of information then you will get more links than other websites that compete in popular products. Make your offerings unique. If you make blue widgets then give all the latest news, information, advice and reviews on blue widgets (niche) rather than on the latest TV soap operas (saturated)
Also it may be beneficial to write a good review about an indirect competitor of yours and ask them to link to you. Ask suppliers and customers of yours to link to you from their website.
Think about problems you can solve for people using your product or service that no one else has solved.
Do the basics of link building
If your not already then get your website listed in industry relevant directories, local business searches.
If any new information about your industry becomes available or changes happen within your company then issue a press releases. check out who is linking to your competitors using tools like Yahoo Site Explorer, then ask the same sites to link to you. Make yourself a list of the high listed sites in your industry sector, and ask them to link to you.
Get your site submitted to general directories, search engines and submit articles about your sector to article directories.
Of course you can just use our great seo services and get a lot of this work done for you whilst you go about your business of making money.

I have been using this strategy for many months now for my website http://www.job-lot.com and it does work. The down side is that it takes a lot of time and effort to keep the momentum going due to hitting so many brick walls.
