Hi and welcome to a new feature we have. I get so many questions asked that im starting a new category called :- Search Engine and SEO Question

So lets start off with this question i received:- How do i get my website higher up the search engines?

Now every website has to be judged on its own merits before i devise a linking plan, however lets assume your website has the correct onsite seo work done and your languishing on page four or five. Some general advice would be to get some backlinks to your website.

Well for general advice then..

* Try not to get too many spammy links. By this i mean links that can be posted easily and without moderation. Your links will sit on the same page as Viagra pills and gambling/porn sites. Spend a little more effort working on link building

* Contact trusted, authority sites. You may not be able to get a link from thebbc.co.uk, cnn.com etc. But how about finding the website that do have a link from these trusted sites and ask them to link to you. One link away is great, two is good and so on.

* If your website has mainly 1 type of links (directories for example) then vary it a little A diverse link profile is a much more effective one. Use video and articles and press releases etc.

Sending Automatic Updates To Twitter and/or Facebook

• Visit the website Twitterfeed.com and sign up
• Once logged in click on “Create New Feed”
• Choose either Twitter (and the account) or Facebook
• Give name of the RSS Feed (e.g. Your Company name or keywords)
  • This name will only show for you in Twitterfeed, so make it descriptive
• Add the RSS feed URL to the settings (you can find this on your blog page – usually called post rss feed. right click and copy link location)
  
• Press “Test RSS Feed”
• You should see green text below the RSS Feed URL field: “Feed parsed OK”
• Go to Advanced Settings
• Adjust the update frequency
  • My recommendation: Every Hour and 1 new update(s) at a time
  • You can update less frequently, or even every 30 minutes, but think very hard if you want to increase the number of updates at a time
• Post content: For your blog feed, you probably want to choose “title only” if you’re posting to Twitter, “title & description” is good for Facebook
• Make sure “Post Link” check-box is checked
• Click on “Create feed”

There you have it, every post you make will go automatically to Twitter and Facebook. There are advanced uses for this and ways to expand but they are for another post.

Its a given that Google loves Twitter and Fecebook, and now Bing have revealed where they love to see your website being discussed. Social network sites Digg and Yahoo Buzz.  The Bing Webmaster Center Program manager, Brett Yount said on the Bing Forum that if you want to boost your websites position and improve rankings on Bing, the get Buzzing and Digging.

He said on the Bing Forum Community:- “If your site pages have good content, submit them to buzz and digg. Both have a high chance of getting your page indexed.”

A new study has shown that your local business can be found by a lot more prospects on the Internet simply by creating and distributing a simple video.

The study by Spotzer Media showed that local business had a 30 times greater chance to get the internet browsers attention when they created a professional video and distributed it through a process called Video Search Engine Optimization or Video SEO process.

“Video SEO helps businesses get found on the Internet. It is a new technology in which a video first gets associated with relevant data and then the video plus data gets distributed across the Internet to be picked up by Google and other search engines.” said Gordon Henry, President of Spotzer Media. “Creating a professional video and then having that video SEO-ed usually results in a high business ranking on Google. That attention from Internet users generates leads and phone calls to the local business.”

The Spotzer survey shows that businesses with properly optimized videos ranked high on the most important search query for small businesses — Google searches for category with location (for example “skin treatment Philadelphia PA”). Over 60% of local businesses with a properly optimized video reached the first page in such a search and over 75% of those attained top five listing position.

For each video Spotzer also calculated the findability improvement ratio — the highest Google ranking for the business before Video SEO divided by the highest Google ranking for the business after Video SEO. The average improvement ratio for all videos was over 30. The effect on number of clicks for the business was even larger than the findability improvement ratio because the number of clicks on Google behaves in a non-linear fashion (i.e. the number 1 rank on Google gets far more than 5 times as many clicks as the number 5 rank).

Moreover, once a business listing gets found, the video also increases user interaction with the page. “Local businesses that have added video to their web pages are seeing significant increases in user attention,” said Simon Greenman, Managing Director of Online for European Directories, which operates online yellow pages directories in seven countries. “Video is the most clicked item on the profile page. Users naturally click on and watch business videos on our sites. When they do, they frequently call the businesses, and the businesses end up benefiting by getting more new leads.”

Many merchants already understand the effectiveness of video advertising and are using it. “Video has become an integral part of our marketing efforts,” said Michael Jundi at United Freight and Logistics. “Since adding video to our website, we have gotten positive feedback from old and new clients. When our sales people talk to business prospects they have them go to our website and view our video.” Said Rick Cochran at Fort Bend Music Center: “I know people are viewing the video because they mention that I am the person in the video when they come in.”

Finding Your Competitors Backlinks

Go to the Yahoo site explorer search located here:- http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/

Once on the site just follow the steps:-

1. First off, type in the website domain of your competitor in Yahoo Site Explorer.

2. Next, click the button that says ‘inlinks’ so you can see all of the inlinks (backlinks) for your competitors site.

3. After this just look above the set of results and you will see this option dropdown menu:-

As default you are shown all the links to your competitor’s site even internal links from one page to another. As we only want to see which other websites are giving backlinks to your competitor change the ‘From All Pages’ to “Except from this domain” so you dont get any internal links showing. It should now look like this:-

4. This list will now only show websites that are linking to your competitor.

So now you have a long (or maybe short) list of websites that all link to the enemy site. What can you do with it? Well you just try and get the same sites linking to you.

1. If there is a link from a website then visit said site and see whether the link is a paid advertisment, a link exchange or the sites owner just wanted to link for further information. Whichever the reason, use the contact page to ask for a link to your website.

2. You may find that there are links from Forums and/or Blogs. Any of these links can be recreated by you just by leaving a comment on the blog with a link back to your site or signing up to the forum and leaving a link in your signature.

3. You could also see links from directories. These are easy to sign up to and leave a link of your own.

So from a little bit of work you could have the same links as your better ranking rival. Once those links are indexed by the search engines you should be looking down on them.

It is very easy to get bogged down in all this seo techno babble and spend too much time researching, investigating and deciding, resulting in you doing nothing.

OnPage SEO

First of all get your onpage content right. What i mean by this is to make sure your titles and descriptions are relevant, say what is on the page and are different for each page, emphasising the keywords you want to rank for.

Make sure your pages have some content on them. Its all very well having a video or flashy images, but search engines dont know what they are all about. They just want to see the text.
